Built on the foundation of responsibility and dedication, the TMHS golf team is not your usual team sport. When attending tournaments, the golf team is ranked on both team and individual performance, encouraging players to hold themselves responsible and put in the work if they want to place highly.
Coach Matt Blume holds his players to high expectations, aiming not only to better their golf play, but to get them ready for the future as well.
“Responsibility, accountability, and independence are all valuable tools in golf and in life as well,” Blume said. “For me, golf should be a life lesson, and I try to teach it that way.”
Golf is special in the sense that it’s only your performance that matters, you have no team to fall back on, rewarding players who think on their feet.
Junior co-captain Emerson Straley understands exactly what it takes to do well on the course.
“I hold myself to being the best I can be, if I can make a smart shot and put myself in a better position, then that’s what I’ll do,” Straley said.
Putting aside all the practice and fierce competition, you’d find the golf team to be a tight knit community.
“The girls are very close, and I love that,” Junior Vicky Volkert said. “We always have hangouts.”
With a 3rd place medalist winner against Jersey Meadow, a 6th place out of 25 against Northgate, and a 1st place medalist winner against Willow Fork just to name a few, the team’s season is starting off on the right foot.
