As Halloween draws near, we should not be the only ones to dress up for the spooky season; our furry friends can also join in the fun! Bark n’ Boo is a yearly event held by TMHS’s FFA organization in order to garner support for the local animal shelters. At this unique version of a trunk or treat, it is encouraged for dogs to come along with their owners to dress up and show off their spooky spirit!
The main highlight at Bark n’ Boo is the annual dog costume contest, where a winner will be chosen from each category based on the originality and cuteness of their matching costume with their pup.
One participant that entered the costume contest was Genesis Pina-Murillo and her Australian shepherd, River, dressed as Lilo and Stitch. “I grew up watching Lilo and Stitch,” Pina-Murillo said. “Since Stitch was mistaken for a dog in the movie, I thought it would be really cute.”
Some decorated the trunks of their cars with a theme and gave out doggy treats as well as candy for the kids. Rylie Rau and her friends went all out for their Winnie the Pooh theme, decorating their car with cardboard cut outs and even a background. “We saw a Pinterest photo,” Rau said. “We knew it would be perfect for all of our dogs.”
This event is not just to show off costumes, but also takes donations that go towards the Doggy Drive, which donates to the Abandoned Animal Rescue. Emily Dennison, teacher and one of the sponsors of Bark n’ Boo, helps in the donation process. “We collect and make different dog toys and dog food, and donate to different groups, such as Big Love Rescue in Cypress,” Dennison said.
